I covered him a bit, and while Van White seemed like a nice enough guy, I wouldn't call him a great council member. He is a fine symbol, since it took until 1979 for this city to elect an African-American councilmember; however, that's taken care of by White's bust in City Hall. I have to believe we can find an more awesome African-American-Minneapolitan to honor on what will soon be a major city street.
