Thank you, Dave Jensen, for a rational response to critics. The level of acrimony and invective on the list lately have made it less attractive a place to spend ones time.
The lack of access to automobiles via 35W at Lake street has long been considered one of the root causes of Lakes Street's decline as an economic engine over the past 30 plus years. I am impressed at the progress made. Many prior efforts to improve access at Lake street were rebuffed by the Highway department based on arguments that rested on fears of overloading the capacity of the Lowry tunnel and others. As most of us will accept, the automobile is still the dominant method by which people in Minneapolis transport themselves, their families and their goods. Mitigating the negative effects seems like a laudable goal, particularly when it can be done in a manner which supports the re-establishment of the grid at Nicollet and Lake. Public policy is difficult work. How difficult becomes increasingly clear as the amount of abuse hurled on this list by the sanctimonious seemingly never ends. It is refreshing to have posts from people who are working for something, as opposed to so much of the chatter which seems to be more oriented against things. Unfortunately it has always been easier to lob grenades than to take the time to understand an issue, do the homework, and work through problems as they occur. Your references to the Hiawatha avenue, and the contrasting of the Snelling and University versus I-94 and Lexington examples give me confidence that your group is paying attention to real world practicalities and are striving to do things in the best way possible. Finally, as a regular reader of this list, I appreciate your patience in posting fewer and more thoughtful responses. I for one, find the twice a day posting of some of our contributors to be a bit tiresome. Thanks again David for a sound response. I hope more will emulate your approach.
