When I was deciding whether or not to run for school board I
knew that it would be more than just a local campaign on local
issues. The entrenched educational establishment and their
supporters aggressively oppose reform on a wide ranging front
from minor local issues to congressional mandates. If you take
the time to observe how these battles play out you will notice a
preponderance of ad hominem attacks. This is because popular
educational dogma cannot win in open debates on the issues.
So it is no surprise that the Tribune sidesteps the issues and
resorts to a personal attack. There is little doubt that Tribune
will successfully derail my candidacy given the contrast of power
between a large metropolitan paper and the voice of a single individual,
but the justification of its opposition is laughable and so in contrast
with reality that it might be classified as hallucinatory. The
justification that the Tribune cites for its rejection of my candidacy
is that I am, "...somewhat narrowly focused on personal concerns," without
identifying what those personal concerns are. Talk to me in person or
visit my website (http://www.QualityEd.us) and you will find that I am more
knowledgeable and broadly focused than any of the other candidates.
I would have had more respect for the Tribune if they had openly stated that
they just don't like my politics and positions. Unfortunately, in the end,
those to stand to lose the most in this election are the city's children of
color who will be faced, once again, with another four years of ineffectual
public school policy.
