Gosh Michael, you have just proven the theory that if you wait you will find something that you TOTALLY agree with from a person you might not agree with on some other issues. The old Great Northern Grocery Market and Deli on Hennepin Avenue supplied similar incredible sandwiches and pickles in the sixties. But you had to take them down the street to Moby's or Mousies to get the beer. The pastrami or cornbeef or Italian roast beef would be over an inch thick, and the pickles were the kind you only got on the coast. I would drive down town and take in a movie JUST to be able to eat such a sandwich, (which you so elegantly describe), afterwards.
I am sitting writing this at 11:30 at night, and I would drive down right now, and have my wife circle the block while I ran in to get the sandwiches, if there was only such a place. If Minneapolis is going to have pretentious ideas of being a "REAL" big city, it is going to have to act like it, and put in such things. We have this incredible ethnic wealth and there is no place you can go and get it casually in the middle of the night. Like the street hot carts making and selling tacos(the kind with diced chicken and diced steak) and beers on the street in some Mexican Towns at midnight. We need a city council junket to New York, or Seattle to learn how to make Minneapolis a funner place. Of course they would be off looking at plays or museums and miss the "REAL" culture of a City. Quality of life means more than just clean streets to walk down. Who wants to walk, if there is no where to go, and no food and cold beer when you get there. Michael, perhaps you should run for City Council. We need someone who knows how to plan for the essentials downtown. How about a great Deli that stays open to at least three, next door to some warehouse like Pike's Market on the Miz River. Buy your sandwich, eat, and watch the submarines go down river. Perhaps with the lights of the worlds shortest suspension bridge in the background. If it needs a little subsidy for a couple of years so what, we need a little fun and Block E surly does not provide it now for our money. We already bought the farm, we might as well make some hay from it! I just realized I have everything, but the right kind of pickle, in the fridge. Ah, but it's just not the same as salivating on the way to go get it. But raiders can't be choosers in Minneapolis. So happy munching to all, and to all a good night. Jim Graham, Ventura Village P.S. David Brauer and others might look at, and follow, past Liquor License approvals, (and turndowns), to find info on other past City Politicos, who might have rode the payolla train. Minneapolis might not have any good deli's, but it is like other big cities in that one regard. Mr. Brandt should be able to put interested parties on at least a couple of trails. _______________________________________ Minneapolis Issues Forum - A City-focused Civic Discussion - Mn E-Democracy Post messages to: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Subscribe, Unsubscribe, Digest, and more: http://e-democracy.org/mpls
