Play? We can't have that! Get to work! Make those car payments! ;-) The overall observation I have had of this *highway construction project* from the beginning is that it continues to design our city for cars more than it designs our city for people. I am so weary of paved urban landscapes that are inhospitable to pedestrians, bicyclists, and a sense of PEACE. > As we move forward into the design work we will need to > suggest some other way to provide community and neighborhood > identity without creating safety concerns. It seems to me that a sure way to *not* accomplish those goals is to build infrastructure for more cars. > The water element was only included in the concept to provide > an identity for Minneapolis as "the City of Lakes". Life is ironic, is it not? We build a highway that cuts off the groundwater flow to an urban lake, thereby causing it to stagnate. After that mess has been "fixed" the advocates of the highway propose a man-made "lake" on a highway bridge to remind us all that Minneapolis is a city of lakes. > The opportunity to establish this bridge, the bridge at Lake > Street, and other bridges as landmarks for the neighborhoods > and a gateway system into downtown Minneapolis will not be lost. The opportunity to stop compounding the madness has not been lost.
