I wrote about www.guidestar.com on this list a number of months back, in
response to folks who were critical of non-profits' apparent "secrecy."  In
any event, I'm glad it's coming to light again.

The numbers quoted are accurate, of course, but only present a minimal
picture.  The $2,283 was for "specific assistance," which in this case was
putting two families up in hotels because the units they were in had 1.  a
two by two hole in the bathroom ceiling, where waste water dripped down on
them from above, and 2. had no kitchen, the walls having fallen in.  That's
the only time I recall we've doled out actual funds specifically to assist
families.  In all cases, it's the work that we do that assists the families,
not the money doled out, except in the frequent cases where we've used our
personal funds, which in 2000 was about $36,000 for each of us, a small
amount for a lawyer with a mortgage-sized student loan.
