Black Mesa is indeed a great place, but I have found
their hours to be a little unpredictable for a
coffeeshop. If they're closed though, never fear,
because you can simply walk ten steps to Maria's cafe,
for awesome Colombian coffee and the best corn
pancakes with (cotijo cheese) this side of the Panama
border. Maria's get's a million stars from me.

As far as recent restaurant discoveries, I'd like to
offer up Victor's 1959 Cafe on 38th and Grand.
(Here's your greasy spoon Wizard!) Anyone remember
Rick's 'ole Time Cafe? Well Victor and Niki bought it
recently, and they've jazzed up the menu with some
amazing Cuban dishes that include the likes of fried
platanos, black beans, yucca and mango waffles. For
those of us who crave a good old fashioned "gringo"
breakfast, try the Professor, with a side of ham to be
official.

(I must admit I'm biased on this one. Niki is the
daughter of my Cypriot Professor and Greek program
director, Dr. Theofanis Stavrou and "the Professor" is
actually named after him!)

BTW: The unbelievable Mango Waffle, complete with real
whipped cream, cinnamon and honey glaze is only like
$2.75 if I remember correctly.
