I think David is correct. No matter what your personal stance on the coming Iraq War, it is rather presumptuous to demand that Council Members elected by ALL Minneapolitans to represent them in City of Minneapolis matters should then pretend to represent all of them on national and international policy. I amazed at the self-righteousness of some people and their attacks upon the moral character of those who may disagree with them on this issue. Would they appreciate the City Council making a resolution to support the war? I imagine they would feel such a resolution to be improper even if it were the conviction of the Council and RT Rybak.
I also agree that whether you agree with him or not RT RYBAK has shown a little moral fortitude in refusing to miss-represent some of those who also voted for him to address City issues. Thank you David, and especially thank you RT for opposing the will of the new "Moral Majority". The following words summarize the issue far more eloquently than any I have yet seen. "Of all tyrannies a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. They may be more likely to go to Heaven yet at the same time likelier to make a Hell of earth. This very kindness stings with intolerable insult. To be 'cured' against one's will and cured of states which we may not regard as disease is to be put on a level of those who have not yet reached the age of reason or those who never will; to be classed with infants, imbeciles, and domestic animals. But to be punished, however severely, because we have deserved it, because we 'ought to have known better,' is to be treated as a human person made in God's image." --C.S. Lewis As Lewis says they may be trying to get to heaven, but make life hell here in Minneapolis. I wonder if they ever consider how even the Nazi's were sure they were morally right, the clansman with his sheet will even preach you gospel about his righteousness, and the suicide bombers also think they are "Morally" correct. God keep us from the moral high ground, for those already occupying it are by far too pure in their morality to abide we of only a slight conviction.
