After speaking out against surveillance cameras downtown, I will admit that I really get freaked out being downtown on Sunday nights, mainly because the lack of crowds makes me feel less safe when I pass several people who appear to be up to no good. And for the past few years I have often advise those who don't get around by car to avoid downtown on Sunday nights.
This being acknowledge, I continue to believe that installing cameras downtown is a bad idea, just as building more prisons is a bad idea. The best way to prevent crime and make all of Minneapolis safer is to support a full-employment based, sustainable economy that is fueled by local, small businesses. Face it folks, underfunded public schools, the growing gap between the rich and the poor, our increasing dependance on large, unreliable corporate partners like Target, and City Hall's participation in a drug war that only serves the interests of our nation's elite make downtown Minneapolis less safe, not the absence of police or surveillance cameras.----Peter Schmitz CARAG On Sat, 07 Jun 2003 13:36:40 -0500 "Steven Houdek" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> writes: > Now I have to admit that it is scarry to think that "big Brother" > might be > watching, but in these financial tough times, I think the city > should accept > the gift.
