WM: From what people on this list are saying, Target got less viable as it slacked off on being ship shape and Bristal fashion. That kind of corporate/company behavior has driven down the viability of many a store--Applebaum's on Western in St. Paul and on Lake St. in Mpls. both come to mind as does the grocery presently at Lake and Nicollet.I agree -- I don't like the idea of the conglomerate forcing the small business owner out and if Target can't turn a profit there, how will Cub?
WM: In the area of groceries, I make an exception. The margin in groceries is slender and now that we are becoming more international, I seem to need ingredients I never had before, so it's nice to have a Rainbow or Cub that carries lots of that stuff. I also detest, loathe, and dispise grocery shopping, so the more under one roof, the better.Besides, part of what I enjoy the most about city living is the LACK of big stores like that. I like the smaller businesses owned and/or managed by my neighbors that treat me like a real customer when I come through the door -- not just a consumer.
Too, there are other big box enterprises that I want to have, like Home Depot type stuff. I was so glad when they came to the quarry, cause I like to spend my money in Mpls. and as long as I own a house built c. 1912, I have a feeling I'll need the goods.
I don't want everything to be big box, there are some things I prefer to get from smaller
places--usually presents for people and optional stuff for myself. I don't see the point of all or nothing.
I would like to have a year round indoor farmer's market where you could get all the specialty items: cheeses, meats, foul, fish, pickled almost anything, fruit and veggies. But that may be an ungoverned nostalgia on my part for the Findley Market around which life revolved during my early childhood before Kroger's and the A&P were such a big deal.
