Ditto. My sentiments exactly. Far better to have many
diverse small businesses and co-ops, than a few (often
heavily taxpayer-subsidized) same
old same old faceless dull chain big boxes.

I can appreciate the sentiments here. But a good
portion of residents who live near the new Cub, I
suspect, value convenience and quality more than
aesthetics.

We shopped at Jerry's New Market across the street
from Target until the atrocious quality and prices of
its goods drove us off. After that we shopped at the
Robbinsdale Rainbow or the Crystal Cub. If I'm going
to shop at Cub, I'd rather shop at a Minneapolis
location than a Crystal location. I realize that not
every north Minneapolis family is a single mom with 3
kids and no car. But convenience is a big draw.

The neighborhood does feature small stores: dirty,
plexiglassed, overpriced stores with outdated
merchandise. A Cub where you can get fresh produce and
reasonably priced groceries will be a boon to this
neighborhood. Jerry's New Market across the street is
in need of a competitive kick in the pants. But I do
worry about the incoming African-American-owned
market. Hopefully it will be proof that individual
owners and big boxes can co-exist.
