PJJ: I agree on the need for including the topic of racism and power dynamics in the discussions, especially as they relate to the inner city. One example is Ron's unfolding story of Hollman/Heritage Park on his TV show Black Focus (Sundays, 5 pm, MTN-TV, Channel 17), in his bi-weekly columns, and in his daily web logs, as he demonstrates the existence and situations of racism in Minneapolis. You can follow this ongoing discussion of racism in Minnesapolis on Ron's web site, www.TheMinneapolisStory.com, which contains his bi-weekly column and daily web log entries page. You can scroll through five of his columns and, to date, 82 Blog (web log) entries (both are relatively new). There is also a section on "Occasional Papers" that also deal with racism in Minneapolis and Ron's attempt to deal with it, both in terms of that exercised by Whites as well as that exercised by Blacks (as in his piece on the NAACP national convention). And he discusses it in his book, "The Minneapolis Story, Through My Eyes." Here he presents a balanced accounting, including two Interludes on "The Good News on Race" (Interludes 5 and 7, the glass half full) and two interludes on the bad news (Racism in Minneapolis, Interludes 2 and 10, the glass half empty). Statements regarding resolving racism are outlined in letters to the Mayor and City Council, also under "Occassional Papers." The full listing of his suggestions for how the city can address and resolve racism are in Chapter 17 of his book. There will be new "occasional papers" addressing racism that will be coming soon. Ron gives what is the best on-going commentary of the "reality show" that is Minneapolis through his TV show, his column, and his web log. Note: copies of his book were sent with the letter in the "Occasional Papers" section to the Mayor and City Council members (the Mayor was actually given a copy also last November, at Lucille's Kitchen). But some of the council have returned their copies on the pretext that they don't accepts gifts. See Ron's commentary on that in his Web Log entry #69. See Ron's Web Log entry #77 re how much of the budget trouble in Minneapolis is caused by Whites creating and implementing programs for Blacks that wind up benefiting primarily Whites at Black social/job/housing expense and White tax paper expense, because the programs are racist, of which Hollman/Heritage Park is but one example. Without a true discussion of racism and power dymnamics in this city this thread should be done. I know that stats are not kept about the heritage of people who post to this list, but these posts are, I feel, not addressing racism in Minneapolis. (I know I am not the list manager but I do think that the rest of the people writing in about being called "white bitch" and how to handle it, or whatever, should be offline).
