Creative idea, but wouldn't the little bugaboos that spread the disease have a field 
day in 10' of
dying elm?   Maybe it could be heavily varnished or otherwise treated.  I think it is 
an idea that
could turn a tragedy into a uniquely wonderful creation... as long as there is a 
professional
doing the carving and not Joe the Butcher or Jason the IT guy.
