I have heard that when large trees in small boulevards share the same space they often have inter-twining root sytems that share nutrients, and inturn can spread disease. As for 'totems'- it's a nice idea but it could be another open door for the neighborhood "opposers" to make there opinions known. There are quite a few folks here in Audubon that will shoot down just about anything pertaining to art and development.
On the other hand the totems at the State fair have been very successful. I do wish though they were more temporary so that the trees could be replaced more quickly for the shade value. Perhaps all of the carvings could be collected and placed in a 'forrest of sculpture' on the lawn by the grandstand. A model such a s that could work in the neighborhoods too. A collection of all of the years trees could be created at a major intersection or park. That way an increase in tree loss would be seen as a gift and much less as mother nature's curse.

It is my understanding that Oak wilt is the disease spread by roots even though
it has a bug that is not how the disease travels. Rather than Dutch Elm
Disease which is spread by the beetle who likes to hide out under the bark
although when a tree is injected you see the hoses going into the roots.

And I too love the idea of "Totems" around. Believe it or not one of the first
sketches for The Green Institute by a Univeristy of Minnesota architectural
graduate studies program showed rawings of the landscpaing at the GI
including "tree totems". Interesting the way ideas just go around inciarcles
and interconnect every once in awhile - usually about every 10,20 or 30 years.
