Residents are allowed to do as they wish with private elm trunks as long as they de-bark them. Once the bark is off, the beetle can not breed and further spread the disease. Boulevard trees are public trees and we do not allow them to remain for carving purposes. De-barking is difficult work and the standing trunk eventually decays to where removal is needed. There is also the concern of what they will be carved into. We prefer to return the site to a plantable location where a new tree can be placed.
