I suppose that one might get the impression that the program was set up
primarily for African Americans because one of the pricipal sponsors was the
Afican American Men's Coalition headed by Shane Price. The mis-impression
might have been furthered by the fact that it was held in a neighborhood in
which few white people live. Unfortunately, one of the reasons we don't
seem to be able to openly discuss our most important problems on this Forum,
or anywhere else for that matter, is that as soon as somebody criticizes a
minority they are labled 'racist', whether the critizism is valid or not.
Most recently, this is what happened to Rev Gallmon right here on this
Forum.

While I too find the idea of giving people 'a free ride' for doing wrong,
the fact is that the County probably saved a whole lot of money and cleared
up alot of paper work in the process. Before anyone goes on about how much
the city/county can make in fines, the fact is you can't get blood out of a
turnip and court proceedings cost money. The up side of this should be that
now the judges and city attorney have more time to spend on new and more
pesky problems. Also, not all sins were forgiven on everyone who showed up.
Many wound up with court dates and still have to show up.

Jill, my sympathy. While legally parked next to our garden at 26th and Knox
last May, one of our local drug dealers hit my car. Dispite the fact that
we got his license number and a picture of his truck hitting my car and he
was caught by the police less than 20 minutes later, he was already out of
the car when the police got to him and therefore, wasn't charged with a
crime. Of course there was no insurance on his vehicle and since he hadn't
bothered transfering the title, couldn't even be shown to be the owner.
While his Chevy suburban was towed and eventually auctioned off, I still was
left with a $500 deductable and a damaged car (and insurance record). The
topper to all of this; I hadn't even made my first car payment on my car.
Life happens.
