The Central Ave location Cub wants to build on needs a subsidy from the city
to happen. It also needs the city to condemn a lot of very descent housing
so it will have a lot large enough for their overgrown parking lot needed
for their big box retail.
Central Ave really doesn't want the Cub store, so keep in mind the city
would be helping out the big box, not the yuppie co-op in NE.

Target didn't end up being such a great catch for North Mpls, hopefully this
new Cub store will be. So far it doesn't sound like Jerry's is asking the
city for a handout to do it either. Good for them. Target got a handout to
build that store, and ultimately what did the city get in return?

Some of what I see the argument being here is who is getting handouts and
who isn't. Some like and want big box, some don't. I think big box and
small box work together in some places and other places they stand alone.
Its too bad that more often you hear about the big boxes getting handouts,
and they tend to be big companies with lots of money already. If we are a
real capitalist society, then why all the corporate welfare? Target
probably didn't make it in North because it wasn't meant to be, the
corporate welfare to get it there ended up being money down the drain in my
opinion. If the Cub is meant to make it, it will, without a handout (and I
personally think Cub will do well there).

My fellow Northeaster likes small box, and I applaud him in supporting them.
He does have some money to do so. I happen to like both. I shop Rainbow
and Home Depot, but if I want really good products or service, I wont find
it at either one. If I need an old house specific item there is no way I
will find it at Home Depot. When I get trim for my basement improvements, I
don't go their either, not much selection.
