Ditto (both the opinion and the studs part).
In fact, in one case, the inspector required the deck-builders I hired to
re-do the supports of a back deck using better-quality wood (apparently, a
facet of that onerous city building code). It's not something I ever would
have noticed, but my contractor friend working on the kitchen said the
inspector was right on and this was a good thing for my long-term
investment.
I probably used a dozen contractors and saw 5-6 inspectors. With the
exception of one missed appointment, they were professional and helpful,
explaining to me why code required certain things (not sure if was state or
city rules) and offering tips to make sure my mix of union and non-union
labor did the job correctly.
I don't want to denigrate other people's bad experiences - my ex-neighbor
Ann Berget's GrassGate outrageousness is still in my mind - but overall, I
felt good to have city inspectors as an extra set of experienced eyes and
ears.
I should also mention on my previous house - re-roofed after the Great
Hailstorm of 2000 - the city roofing inspector found several flaws committed
by my overcommitted contractor and, with one phone call to said contractor,
got them fixed. That's right; he offered to call so I wouldn't have to, and
got it taken care of. That's service!
