I am getting many off-line responses claiming the conspiracy theories are real (bribes, pocketed politicians and union controlled licensing boards).
It is nice that we can work on our own properties without licensure. But, many of us are not real comfortable wiring, plumbing and HVAC'ing our own home. It would be preferable if we could hire someone to do "and honest days work for an honest day's pay" that has knowledge and experience. Finally, PLEASE don't turn this discussion into a topic of how great the city inspectors are. Some will have positive experiences, some will have negative. This is the same response you will get if we discuss suburban inspectors -- cities without these additional licenses. Can SOMEONE explain why Mpls has it's own licensing process? Please don't speculate; I would like something official. I know city employees and leaders read this forum, please help us understand why we intentionally limit ourselves to a few market providers. If you (our CMs and Mayor Rybak) don't know, then you ought to ask why. These licenses limit private investment in Mpls, drive residents out, and cost your constituents more for services than suburban families pay.
