The sky is not falling In 1995, Minneapolis acquired earned its infamous nickname. In that year, there were 97 murders. In 2004, YTD there have been 20 murders, or a 56% reduction from the heyday of gang/crack instigated crimes in Minneapolis. YTD there is 8,482 fewer victims of serious reported crimes than in 1995. A 47% reduction. There still is much more to do to reduce violence within our neighborhoods. Some is being done by the police department and much is dependent upon the community. Jingoism aside, Minneapolis is a much safer place to live and work than it was in 1995.
