If you look at any of the busiest bus routes in Minneapolis, the street
was a former street car route (with a few exceptions). It makes sense.
When a stable transportation route is established (i.e. rail), development
follows. When the former street car lines were built, development in the
city followed. Many of the most densly developed area in the city were
areas that were built up in anticipation of service by the old street
cars.

If you want to know what a mature light rail system would look like review
the metropolitan council's 2020 and 2025 transit plans, or you could just
look at the old twin cities rapid transit street car lines - they're
basically the same.

- The Central Corridor on University - old street car line.
- The Riverview Corridor on W. 7th in St. Paul - old street car line.
- The North Star Commuter Rail - follows an old street car line to Anoka.
- The Midtown Greenway corridor from Hiawatha to Eden Prairie via Hopkins
- Lake street was a street car line to Hopkins (another line in Hopkins
continued to Excelsior and Tonka Bay).
- The Minneapolis NE Corridor and the St. Paul NE Corridor both end in
White Bear Lake - street car lines served White Bear Lake via Mahtomedi
(and also continued to Stillwater).
- The Red Rock Rail Corridor (connects to North Star and ends in Hastings)
- roughly follows Como Ave a street car line, and Hastings was served by
street cars as well.
- The Dan Patch Corridor from St. Louis Park to Northfield (removed from
the 2025 plan) was actually planned to run on an old commuter line that
operated during the height of the street car era.

The Metropolitan Council's transportation plan is basically to rebuild the
old street car system using light rail, dedicated bus lanes, and commuter
rail.
