[From Jennifer Lovaasen - Metropolitan Council]:
When Metro Transit secured operating funds for the Hiawatha Line, the 2 a.m.
bar closing wasn't even on the radar. Right now, we simply don't have the
funds to extend our operations for the additional hour.

Metro Transit is tracking requests for "night owl" service. We will also
monitor ridership and behavior on the last trains. If demand merits, Metro
Transit may request additional operating funds to extend service.

-------------------------
11,800 customers rode the Hiawatha Line on Monday, June 28.

The first-day ridership exceeded by nearly 25% Metro Transit's goal to
average 9,500 rides each weekday through the end of the year.

The ridership figure is based on a sampling of 30% of all train trips
operated Monday. Staff members counted the number of customers on these
trips boarding at each station regardless of how the customer reached
the rail platform. This included customers using the Fort Snelling
park-ride, customers transferring to the Hiawatha light-rail line from
buses and those who walked up or were dropped off at rail stations.

Expect the next rail ridership report on Tuesday, July 6, covering the
first week of service. After that, rides will be reported monthly.
