I thought this was a great point by John that deserves more attention. It's
been several years since my last moving violation, but I do believe that
he's right that the majority of the citation fee goes to the county, not the
city.

For me, that would seem to undermine the theory that this whole red light
camera plan is simply a revenue grab.

Another item that may be of interest to folks concerned about this issue is
that the red light cameras are part of the MPD 5-year draft business plan
for 2004-2008.

It's part of section three - key initiatives and other models of providing
service

__________
4. Enhance traffic safety
Key Initiative - Other Model of Providing Service:
Timeline: Year One, Year Two

Description:

Use of red light cameras to detect semaphore violations can assist with
traffic safety in light of fewer police resources. This initiative is
planned to be tested for feasibility and effectiveness.

Projected Impact on Performance Measures

The use of motorcycles and red light cameras will impact numbers of
automobile accidents and injuries from accidents due to a greater focus on
traffic safety in the neighborhoods.

So it seems to me that the point behind this is to increase focus on traffic
safety without having to pull officers from other pressing needs in light of
our limited resources.

Isn't that what we want?
