I think I was in this discussion somewhere with information about Whittier Community School for the Arts. An important piece of information here is that much of the cost for the fabulous art and music partnerships Whittier has with the Children's Theater, Jungle Theater, Intermedia Arts, Mpls. Art Institute, McPhail School of Music and Madeline Island Music Camp is born by the provider themselves either directly or through grants given to them or the school.
I don't believe the district isn't bearing any more for the cost of arts and music programming than they are for math, science, English, etc. The cost of the coordinator position is gradually being picked up by the district. It is still not funded full time at this point. In this case it was the neighborhood that worked for five years to develop, nurture and solidify these partnerships between our rich arts and music organizations and the school. This work occurred through the Whittier Alliance Arts and Education Committee that has now been retired because they accomplished their mission. The neighborhood contributed a small amount of NRP funds ($?) years back for implementation and coordinating expenses. My opinion of arts and music v.s. science and math discussion is.... I believe they are all interrelated and important experiences. Barb Lickness Whittier ===== "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world.
