Your friends in advertising were making good money in the commercial arts. The presumption here is that the only desirable jobs in the arts are those of "stars" and those doing "fine arts." If you only count star jobs, then you've missed the boat. Not everyone interested in theater, for example, is interested in leading roles. It takes grips, and carpenters, painters, hunters and gatherers (props), ticket takers and ushers, seamstresses and gofers, printers and typists. I read somewhere in the past that it takes 9 people off-stage for every person on stage--on average.

I would think that there are as many jobs in the arts as there are in any other given field.

Not every kid in school is going to be miraculously talented in the arts or a genius. The greater number will always be average. And that's perfectly OK. It may be nice to dream that one's son or daughter will be a Rhodes Scholar, win a Pulitzer, discover a new planet. That, too, is usually unrealistic.

I spent 14 years working as a stage hand--in the days before women were allowed in the unions, so I didn't make what I could if I were starting out today. The work itself was rewarding. A young friend of mine, working free lance as an electrician for various theaters around Mpls. pulled down an impressive amount of money two years ago, enough to own a home and a very nice truck, a boat, and a goodly number of tools for work, not to mention all the electronic goodies--stereo, DVD, computer, cell phone, etc.
