Kahn: Election Will Not Change

"After she pleaded guilty Thursday to stealing
campaign fliers from New Hope, Minn., residents'
door steps, Rep. Phyllis Kahn, DFL-Minneapolis,
said Friday she does not think her conviction
will affect the upcoming election."

I happen to agree with Ms. Kahn that her crime
will have no affect on the election, but the
real question is whether it should. I believe
that it should. I believe that someone with
the morality that would allow them to remove
another candidate's campaign literature should not
hold office. I also think that many other
people in my neighborhood have the same type
of morality: that as long as you are doing
"good works" the tactics you use to achieve
them are justified, so they will reelect Ms. Kahn.
I also believe that Ms. Kahn's reelection will
accurately reflect the ethical standards of
the DFL. It's not as though they couldn't
replace Ms. Kahn with a more palatable candidate.
The DFL could endorse a write-in candidate and they
would still win in this precinct. Finally, I believe
that if Ms. Kahn was an honorable person she
would step aside and allow a more ethical person
to represent the voters. Running for office
again despite her conviction is Ms. Kahn's real
crime.
