Actually what they do - and what they are needed for - is to keep people
from pulling into the intersection during the yellow when there is no room
for them to clear the intersection for the cross traffic. The resulting
gridlock brings traffic to a standstill and often affects neighboring
"upstream" intersections.
Minneapolis is supposed to be the smartest city in the country. Ithink
we can figure out green means go, and red means stop withoutfurther
direction. All these officers accomplish is slowing downtraffic.
Well, we certainly cannot figure how not to block intersections... I see
it everyday - done by cars, trucks, commercial vehicles AND city busses.
Both taxing drivers and cops directing traffic are bad ideas - the better
idea would be to have the cops monitoring each intersection with ticket
book in hand. Simply issue a ticket to every driver who improperly blocks
an intersection - you would get better traffic flow or increased revenue -
or both!
