A couple of people in this thread have commented that they rarely see people blow through red lights. That they don't see them scares me -- it's evidence that they as well as other drivers are not as competent, alert and observant as they ought to be.

On any given day in rush hour traffic, I can easily spot half a dozen people blowing through red lights. If I could give tickets for moving traffic violations, I could easily issue 20 a day -- all for non-speeding violations, too. By and large, most drivers are completely incompetent.

In our car-centered culture, that's unlikely to change. All you have to do to pilot 2 tons of flying metal down the highway at 100 feet per second is barely stumble your way through a minimal driving test once in your life, and then show up every 4 years to pay an administrative fee to renew your license.

The Virginia study is flawed; I don't see red-light cameras causing injuries (correlation doesn't prove causality, among other things). I see bad drivers attempting to run red lights with impunity causing rear-end accidents with injuries.

I used to be strongly opposed to red-light cameras. Now, I'm somewhat leaning the other way.

My lifelong avocation has been driving, traffic and highway safety.
