Congratulations to Commissioner Hauser for giving the other side of the issue
for
the Athletic field at De La Salle. Yes there are several opinions that support
the
legality of the De La Salle use agreement. The Outside attorney agrees there
is a
contractual relationship between De La Salle and the Park Board to Provide
Space.
Barry Clegg's is not the only opinion. He has not shot holes in the opinion of
the outside attorney. The Park Board must negotiate the use agreement and design
in good faith or risk liability.

I served on the Commission that helped set up the Regional Park. Many of us
worked
hard to save the historic homes. Many Park Commissioners (especially Patty
Hillmeyer)
tried to have the homes removed. What would be the community's response now
if the MCDA and Park Board tried to ignore the 23 year old agreement that
allowed the
existence of the homes?

I understand the delay in actions to build the athletic field is tied to the
lack of a safe
bridge over Nicollet Avenue. Without the rebuilt bridge, the fire trucks would
not have
had easy access to the Eastern Tip of the Island.

The unusual part of the Regional Park is the existence of homes privately
occupied
on the Island. I do not think this is done very often if ever.

Also, there is no conflict of interest. There is not even a special interest
or an
appearance of a conflict of interest. If I followed Jim Bernstein's logic, I
could not
have voted on any issue that effected the University of Minnesota while a
Councilmember. Yes I am University fan and an alumnus. I regularly cheer for
the
U of M. I have even belonged to the Alumni Association. Calling this a
conflict or
appearance of conflict is absurd.

I appreciate Robert Lilligren's and Tracy Nordstrom's comments on treating
candidates
issues with respect. Several of the posts have been simply nasty and full of
wild
charges. I appreciate the courage of folks especially elected officials who
post a different opinion than Chris Johnson and Christine Viken. I hope
objective readers
can see there are two sides to the issue.

I must now declare my conflict of interest according to Jim Bernstein. My
youngest
daughter graduated from De La Salle. Worse I respect and appreciate the efforts
of De La Salle to serve Minneapolis youth especially inner city.
