You know full well he's saying the idea that a librarian can't run for
Library Board is what's absurd, not the person suggesting it. Would you also
say that teachers shouldn't run for the School Board?
Yes, I do, hence the answer. It is not absurd to want the board to
represent the patrons. This does not exclude the board from representing
needs of the staff. But the focus has to be by the patrons, for the
patrons, of the patrons, that amorphous group of library users who are
not versed in the arcane knowledge librarians have.
These six elected board members (the 2 others being the appointees of
the mayor for one, the city council for the other) are the taxpayers
only formal access to the library system decision making process for
which they are paying. I do advocate for the staff and would think that
the board would also. But remember, until Hadley was hired as director,
the director was always a librarian him/herself and advocated for the
staff, allegedly, at every turn. (In reality, the director probably only
advocated for management staff, not the librarians on the floor.)
Furthermore, I thought you were the one who'd spent so much time advocating
FOR librarians to be on the Library Board so as to have a greater
understanding/appreciation for what actually goes on in our libraries on a
daily basis. If I'm right about that, why the sudden switch?
That must have been two other guys. I've never advocated for librarians
to be on the board, nor would I. I did advocate for board members to
listen to the librarians so that they can understand their point of view
and reflect it where appropriate.
I very seldom have anything to say about the school board. I am not a
product of Minneapolis schools, my kid did not attend Minneapolis
schools, so I have no base of information from which to either complain
or praise. Further, most of my schooling was done under the aegis of the
Catholic Church in Cincinnati, a culture far removed from Minnesota's. I
don't think they had a school board.
