I was going to make this comments to Mr. Hoover's post, but Mr. Harris beat
me to it.
Regarding Mr. Hoover's post on the mayoral outcome:
Try as I might, I simply cannot find nor formulate a coherent definition for
"social justice." Pretty much the same for "environmental justice." They
appear to be strong political buzzwords that I often hear around election
time, most by fringe or Green candidates. If I had to guess, they appear to
be more macro principles that lack any type of meaningful implementation at
the mayoral level, especially considering the other "needs" we have at this
time.
A couple of other points about Mr. Hoover's post:
He stated he believed there were "four kinds of citizens in Mpls that make
it so" regarding the outcome of the mayor's race. Though only three examples
were given, as best I could see. Did I miss something?
To predict that a DFL mayoral candidate will win is like predicting the sun
will set in the west tonight. I think the Green candidate is outspoken and
trendy, but not a serious contender, nor holds a realistic platform. I don't
trust her for a variety of reasons. That said, I really don't trust any of
them, so I'd be in Mr. Hoover's first category. Nevertheless, if a long-shot
Green does win, I do believe political sabotage will occur. But how is that
different than if a Republican would win? (which is probably more of a long
shot than a Green.) Sabotage is the step-child of politics and the energy
that keeps it going. Politics as usual.
I agree with Mr. Hoover that nothing will change here. During election time,
we play mental tricks on ourselves. We convince ourselves that "this one"
candidate is different and that he/she will actually change things and bring
a "new perspective" and "breath of fresh air" to Washington/St.Paul/the
Minneapolis mayor's office to "shake things up" and "change the status quo"
and "rock the old boys network." It seldom happens. I see no reason why it
will change this time. Jesse was the last to really do it, and I thought it
was great, but I was probably in the minority.
End of rant.

It seems to me that the political dialogue is so tightly managed by the
DFL
(would be joined by the Republicans, but so far not in Mpls local
politics)
that there is no hope of a candidate winning on the basis of social
justice
and/or environmental justice concerns.
If it really that the dialogue is tightly managed by the DFL or that
social and environmental justice concerns are not as important to
voters as some would like to believe?
