And to think we (MPRB) received similar awards in San Antonio (where they are this week by the way) just a mere 10 years ago. We received two Gold Medals telling us we were #1 - the same as this award St. Paul got this week. I can assure we were a team, we were very positive and upbeat, we had visionary landscape architects at the head of planning and we had the greatest community planning staff that loved doing CAC's. On top of it we had a very private, ethical, trustworthy Superintendent who for several years lived in the Wirth House and continually met with the Board individually (breakfast or lunch) to keep everyone up to date on the biggest, hottest items.

Also don't forget St. Paul's Parks are a Department of the City so one has to be careful in the assessment - they are not exactly the same systems. Also we are a state with very high standards for our parks, whether they be state, regional or local, neighborhood parks. It is Minnesota where we almost all love our trees, lakes and rivers, our natural green space - isn't it what makes Minnesota and the Twin Cities such a great place to live.

Ok, I know this is walking a narrow line for Minneapolis specificity, but
I can't help myself. In light of the upcoming Park Board election
everyone should be aware of our neighbor-to-the-east's recent national
award for the best park administration.

An article can be found in the Pioneer Press
(http://www.twincities.com/mld/twincities/news/local/12956966.htm - free

The report includes the line, "Judges look at long-range planning, fiscal
management, environmental stewardship and other criteria."

Interesting isn't it, how national organizations such as the National
Recreation and Park Association and the American Academy for Park and
Recreation Administration recognize the importance of these things, but
our current Gang of 5 won't plan for the long term (no current master
plan), make poor financial decisions (privatization), and appear to prefer
development over preservation (football fields over open space).

That's why I will be voting for reform candidates such as Scott Vreeland
who, coincidently, has worked for years to protect and improve our city's
environment and includes fiscal management and long-range planning as
critical issues on his web site www.scottvreeland.org.

Other reform candidates are listed on the park watch web site at:

We NEED a better park board!
