Not sure I agree with that. We routinely sign up external IT pro speakers (often the same ones for MMS and TechEd, since the audiences didn’t overlap) to speak on a variety of real-world topics. It’s always an interesting challenge to balance deeper product group-run sessions with these real-world IT pro sessions, but I think we do a decent job of it.
Will there be a different balance between the two events? Yes, you’ll see many more Microsoft people at TechEd (including me ☺) who likely won’t attend the DevConnections event. You’ll see a huge event at TechEd with an endless variety of sessions. (Think it was hard to choose between sessions at MMS? TechEd expands that by an order of magnitude. Of course we carefully schedule tracks of content so you can follow that track all week long.) TechEd is largely built on sessions that have been vetted to ensure the proper messaging is made available. Early days of MMS it was all about how products worked in the real world, not how they were developed to work. One thing I've heard this week (from Microsoft folks no less) is that people like IT/Dev Connections because its a conference with a User Group feel. And, it will remain that way, even though we're expanding for next year. Its very personal, allowing attendees direct access to speakers and experts. While in earlier years the number of sessions at TechEd allocated to System Center, MDT, community, etc. was smaller than at MMS, the last few years it’s been pretty much the same session allocations. So there hasn’t really been any “watering down” for TechEd. We’ll let everyone know when the TechEd call-for-content goes live. It was interesting last year because the session submissions were rather lopsided: A few topics had lots of interest, a lot of topics has light interest. So people got grumpy when their sessions were declined, while others had multiple sessions accepted.
