The first part of FF7 is like a "guided tour", with very little freedom of
movement. This is probably intentional, to make sure players don't get lost
because they don't know the game controls and the game world yet. Maybe he
thought you were still in that part and didn't enjoy the game because your
movement was too restricted.

And a few European games (Zoo, L'affaire). And there were a few text
adventures as well.

I played BlockOut years ago and I liked it.
By the way, the N64 3D tetris is quite different, it uses a 3D sphere. I
never played it, but I saw a promotional video.
About 2D and 3D: I like some games better in 2D (Lemmings) and others in 3D
(racing games, like WipeOut). It just depends on the game. The bad thing is
that software developers think that only 3D will sell.
