Actually, PPP is a tunneling protocol, which does not really fit into the ISO
layer. It can be used on top of any kind of communication protocol to tunnel
any kind of communication protocol. The main point of PPP is that you can use
it to communicate from one endpoint to another endpoint.
E.g., you can package TCP/IPsec package in a PPP package that you send over a
classic TCP/IP network. This is used to build private secure IP communication
layers over the non-secure internet. This is also known as a secure virtual
network.
Another usage of PPP is to transfer TCP/IP packages over an X.25 private or
public network. Or to transfer netbios packages over TCP/IP.
Ofcourse, the most wellknown usage of PPP is to build a TCP/IP layer over a
serial line or over an ISDN network to access the internet from home.
Compared to this, SLIP does have its limitations, since SLIP is only designed
to send IP packages over a serial line. But that also makes it easier to
implement and to experiment with, so I think that it is not such a bad idea
to first concentrate on SLIP before even attempting to build the TCP/IP over
serial line subset of PPP.
