Frankly I think that is a tad simplistic. If I'm not mistaken, about 50
percent of the club's revenues go towards the players' salaries. A
great deal of the club's asset value would also depend on the players
(besides OT itself, of course). If United stops doing well, the PLC
won't be as profitable. So any good chief executive must make his chief
priority to ensure that United continue to produce on the pitch. To be
fair to Kenyon, he did his fair share to ensure that.

If United WEREN'T generating revenue through toothpaste and what-not,
it would STILL have to offer returns to shareholders, which would
probably mean cutting back on the budget for player salaries and other
footballing costs. Look what is happening at Leeds.

So we should thank our lucky stars that the PLC can make all this money
from bibs and schoolbags and other odds and ends, because that means
there is enough money to satisfy the players (and therefore the real
football fans) and also the shareholders.

Let's not kid ourselves that football ISN'T big business. It is. And we
happen to support the club that is not only the best on the pitch, but
also on the stock market and at the cash register.
