Whilst the above is hard to argue with at one level I do expect the basics to be performed well at that level. The players you mention did not, as far as I know, display such poor technique in basic technique and skill. I would have expected the first touch and close control to be substantially mastered at a reasonably early age. In an international player, one with Utd and presumably earning a fair bit of loot a week, it's simply not good enough.
