If Ruud is a diver, then all strikers are divers because he doesn't do anything that the rest don't do. Of course, as he's a United player, what he does is focused on and made out to be the root of all evil. It sells papers and gives the ABUs something else to moan about.
It's a fact of life that players will now drop to the turf with the slightest of contact from a defender, so defenders, if there's no pressing need to challenge a striker, just need to keep their hands and feet to themselves when they're in the penalty area and the ref won't have to make the decision. A good case in point is the Stuttgart goalkeeper on Wednesday night. He was too eager to get the loose ball, made contact with Ronaldo a bit too physically, and down went the kid. I'm sure Ronaldo could have stayed on his feet if he'd tried hard enough, but why should he rescue the goalie from the mess he got himself into? If the keeper had just kept his distance and ushered the kid away, end of story. I'm sure we'd all like a return to the days when players were generally honest and penalties were correspondingly rare, but I can't see how we'll ever get back to those times at the moment. Cynically, you now either exploit the system as it is or suffer the consequences. Terry ------------------------ Yahoo!
