I took a quick look at the source and judging by the log message you
gave I can definitely say that sftp fails or Multisync "thinks" it
fails.

It *might* be a problem with the scp/sftp version you are running,
Multisync calls it as follows (for retrieving files): 
"sftp -o Port=22 -o BatchMode=yes [EMAIL PROTECTED]:remote_file local_file"
Does calling it like that work for your from the command line?

Clutching at straws: /tmp does exist and is writable by you?

The only other idea I have left at the moment is to use ftp instead of
sftp for syncing. Opie has an ftp server built-in, you must configure
the plugin to use port 4242 and root/rootme or root/Qtopia as user/pass
combo. Make sure you have configured the Z to accept connections from
your desktop machine (Settings tab/security) and keep in mind that you
might be presented with a screen on the Z asking you to confirm the sync
before the data goes anywhere.
