Thanks Michael, but I've actually made progress.

I was able to get the usbserial generic driver to attach with:

   modprobe usbserial vendor=0x0731 product=0x0528

So then it attaches to /dev/ttyUSB0

However, when I set this in multisync and do a "test connection" the
connection fails (though now it fails after several seconds instead of
immediately like before).

At this point it no longer appears to be a USB-subsystem issue and now is a
multisync and my phone issue...

Thoughts?
