AFAIK gdm calls PAM only _after_ login is filled. I may be wrong and
that would be a good news.

E.g. if MusclePAM is installed, PAM is called and if a smart card is
inserted, gdm requests to enter the PIN. So gdm seems to have knowledge
when a smart card is present.

When do you see the "enter PIN" message?
- just after you insert the card?
- after you pressed the return key or enterer an empty login?
- even when no card is present?

NO!!! I was wrong. GDM and also the shell is clever, i.e. PAM is smart. In the first step the user name is requested and after this the possibilities are checked how the login should proceed. If the first PAM module is MusclePAM the next step is the message "Enter PIN" or "Enter PIN an keypad", so there is no problem with this.

What is your default/initial gdm question, just after boot for exemple?

I think your are right, I think, the dialog to enter showed up, after I
entered my username and an empty password and then the dialog came up to
enter the pin at the keypad of the reader.

But gdm has the bug, that the dialog, e.g.
"Please enter PIN" is duplicated after the selected window manager starts.

I don't know this bug.

The PAM function

pam_show_message(pamh, "Enter PIN at card terminal.");

is duplicated.
