My setup required pcscd running and using coolkey library through Firefox for a security device. I knew it was working correctly when it would blink when I inserted my card in the reader. I am not sure if your's works the same way, but it may. If you need to use pcscd, try running it in console and seeing it's output. I had to adjust some things to get it working right, based on the output I saw.
