hmm. does anyone know details about ubuntus move away from hal?

on my (updated) 9.10 laptop hal is still installed, but no idea
if that is the case for new installations too.

also what is the replacement for hal? somewhere I read udev,
which would be strange, as the udev developers suggested I use
hal instead of udev for openct.

and there are some WhateverKit packages, but I don't know if
those are closely tied with the gnome user interface (e.g.
a DiskKit for detecting mass storage usb tokens and friends
and mouting those filesystems etc.), of if they are generic
services that can be used in a server environment too.

For example it would be nice if servers with text console
only could still use usb smart card readers / usb crypto tokens
for authentication in login. udev or hal (or usb scanning)
worked for that purpose.

So who is the new guy in town, and how can it repleace hal etc?

Regards, Andreas
