I installed Ubuntu 9.10 in a virtual machine and had no problem using
pcsc-lite. I don't remember having to start the hal daemon manually.

I will have to look at DeviceKit and add support for that in
pcsc-lite. It looks like it is the new (GNU/Linux) technology for
device hotplug.

The best you can do for your driver is to support as much enumeration
schemes as possible. My CCID driver does that and support libusb,
libhal and none.

If a new scheme is needed for DeviceKit I will document it in [1].
