I'm usually involved in authentication in the distro so please consider
the following as IMHO.
I think you should check out udev rules. with udevmonitor you actually
understand what device is connected where, therefore you can retrieve
the info you need. This is again something done for "plug&play". Udev
then notifies via dbus to devicekit.
It actually depends on you, if you want to go low-level, you might
consider udev, while in "userspace" devicekit might be better.
