Right. You made it clear that you were starting with MJPEG. That's why I
suggested using VLC to transcode it in real time to MPEG2, which can
then be directly consumed by the MVP.

I use "motion" but not vlc - yet. "motion" streams MJPEG but if you're
just monitoring the stream then it seems to make sense to use vlc
on the camera source directly. You'll lose the annotations (date etc) in the
corner of the pic but it'd make more sense than reconverting an already
converted stream. "motion" can call scripts on detection of motion
so that could be used as hooks into the mvp.

Yes. I think mvpmc includes an option where it will listen on a network
port and display received messages on the on-screen-display. Once you
saw a message, you'd have to stop what you were viewing, and navigate to
the part of the UI where you can access the camera's stream. This could
be used as a stop-gap way to inform you of activity until a more
integrated solution is built.

That sounds an interesting short term hack to get something going.
Time to look into vlc some more.

I can answer questions on integration with "motion" as I've used that
a fair bit. Incidentally while zoneminder has a nice web interface I got
too many false alerts with that and found that "motion" was more reliable.
