That's what I thought.  Which brings me back my original question.

I have a few other videos where it squeezes the video into the top half of the
screen.

Here's an idea.  IS it possible for mvpmc to detect noncompatible resolutions
and if detected, pass video through vlc if the mvpmc was configured for it? 
That would be great.

Or scale it up as much as possible and letterbox or whatever is needed to fill
in the rest.  This might take too much resources on he MVP.
