I used to record in the MythTV default of 480x480, so I can confirm that. I now use 352 x 480 and 352 x 240, which seem to work fine. Those are values that were recommended on this page: http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/Recording_Parameters Though in retrospect those are pretty wildly different aspect ratios, and neither is close to 4:3. I'd expect to see numbers more like: 352 x 264 480 x 360 Should try these. But I see when you tried values with a perfect 4:3 ratio: > It seems to fail with 320x240. it failed. It may be expecting to see specific values on one of the dimensions, but tolerant of variations on the other dimension.
