The ability to to use the MVP remote as a universal remote by having the 
MVP retransmit the codes?

That doesn't seem all that compelling, or more importantly, worth the 
effort, vs. using a cheap universal remote.

I could see some benefit to using an MVP as an Ethernet connected IR 
blaster so a MythTV server could control a set-top-box that's at some 
distance from the server, but that seems like a rare scenario. (Usually 
the set-top-box is placed close to the computer with the capture card.)

A bit more compelling would be using the MVP to replay "macros" that 
reconfigure your sound system - say turning on a surround sound amp and 
putting it into movie mode, or prior to starting music playback, putting 
it into music mode. That'd be a bit harder to pull off with a cheap 
universal remote, but as I understand doable with the high-end $80+ remotes.
