Here's my suggestion.. but I don't know if this would all be possible.

As an alternative to a complicated solution, what about the following?

As per 2) above, you would have the automatic colour ONLY FOR HIDDEN
TASKS, override any colours set manually (although this must not
interupt the inheriting process in that, in a tree that inherited its
entire colour from a single root, sub-tasks of Hidden tasks would also
have the manual colour. I think it is really useful to be able to
quickly see which tasks are accessible in the ToDo lists.

Secondly, with regard to PROJECTS, it is extremely useful to be able
to see when a project, as opposed to a task, drops into the ToDo view
(typically when all its subtasks have been completed). But it's also
nice to have projects inherit colours. So I'd suggest a slightly
different formatting to identify a project - one of the following:-

- you could create a 'raised' profile for a task that was designated
as a project (not sure if this is possible with the tree view that you
use)
- you could outline a task that was designated as a project - perhaps
a rectangular grey outline with curved corners for example.
- you could have a shaded background for a task that was designated as
a project.
